Arsenal F.C. great Paul Merson believes Xabi Alonso could use the UEFA Europa Conference League to assess and reshape his Chelsea F.C. squad if the club qualifies for the competition next season.
Writing in his column for Sportskeeda ahead of Chelsea’s final Premier League game against Sunderland A.F.C. on Sunday, Merson said the tournament would provide the new manager with room to test ideas.
“The Conference League will give Xabi Alonso the chance to improvise stuff,” Merson said.
“He can use that competition to find out more about his squad. For a new manager at a big club, that is an asset.”
Alonso was recently confirmed as Chelsea’s next manager and will officially assume control after the current campaign ends.
