Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett and singer-actress Selena Gomez joined Michael Fassbender in acclaimed filmmaker Brady Corbet’s next feature film, described as an ambitious and “X-rated” epic.
The upcoming project marked the fourth feature from Corbet, whose recent film The Brutalist earned widespread critical acclaim and multiple Oscar nominations.
Blanchett confirmed her involvement during a masterclass appearance at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday, where she revealed she was “about to work with Brady Corbet on a film.”
Industry publication Variety later confirmed that Gomez had also joined the cast, following earlier reports about her involvement.
Although plot details remained largely undisclosed, Corbet had previously revealed that the untitled feature would be largely set in the 1970s and would push creative boundaries.
“The film spans from the 19th century into the present day it’s just predominantly focused on the ’70s. The film is really, really genre-defying,” Corbet had said in an earlier interview.
The director also disclosed that the movie would be shot using rare eight-perf 65mm cameras, signalling an ambitious visual approach similar to the cinematic style seen in The Brutalist.
Speaking at the Storyhouse Screenwriting Festival in Dublin last month, Corbet hinted at the scale of the production, revealing that the screenplay ran to about 200 pages.
By comparison, he noted that the script for The Brutalist was 165 pages long and resulted in a three-and-a-half-hour runtime.
Producer Andrew Morrison oversaw the project under the Kaplan Morrison production banner.
Blanchett, one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actresses, had worked with acclaimed directors including Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, Guillermo del Toro and Wes Anderson.
She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator and later secured Best Actress honours for Blue Jasmine.
Her most recent appearance came in Father Mother Sister Brother, directed by Jim Jarmusch, which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
Gomez, who rose to fame through the Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place, steadily built a successful acting career alongside her music career and beauty brand Rare Beauty.
She gained critical recognition for roles in Spring Breakers and Emilia Pérez, the latter earning her a shared Best Actress award at Cannes.
Gomez also starred in the hit Hulu comedy series Only Murders in the Building, which had already been renewed for a sixth season.
