Tesla chief executive Elon Musk has criticised casting choices in The Odyssey, adding to debate surrounding the film on social media.
The discussion started after director Christopher Nolan confirmed that Lupita Nyong’o would play Helen of Troy in the adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic. Some users questioned the choice online, while others defended it and said the story allows creative interpretation.
Musk reacted to a post on X from commentator Matt Walsh that criticised Nyong’o’s casting. Musk reposted the comment and replied, “True.”
In another post, Musk responded to a user discussing race changes in film adaptations and wrote, “He wants the awards.”
The comments sparked more debate online as users argued over representation in films and historical characters.
Actor and television host Whoopi Goldberg defended Nyong’o during an episode of The View. Goldberg said the actress is regarded by many people as one of the world’s most beautiful women.
The Odyssey stars Matt Damon as Odysseus and Anne Hathaway as Penelope. The cast also includes Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron.
The film is expected to be released in July 2026.
