Following a United Nations resolution on the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade, Ghana is set to convene a global conference on reparatory justice.
In a statement released on Monday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the three-day conference will hold from June 17 to 19 in Accra. It will be hosted by President John Mahama, who also serves as the African Union’s champion for reparations.
The conference is expected to bring together heads of state, diplomats, scholars, activists, and representatives of international organisations to advance discussions on global reparations.
“Outcomes of the Conference are expected to include a set of recommendations and forward-looking actions to guide subsequent engagements at the continental and international levels, as well as to build concretely on the unprecedented momentum generated by the UN Resolution”, the statement said.
Deliberations will focus on translating the UN resolution into a practical and coordinated global framework for reparatory justice.
Organisers say the outcome document will outline policy directions, institutional frameworks, and mechanisms for sustained international cooperation on reparations.
