Former Olympic podium finisher Chika Chukwumerije has officially taken the helm of the Abia State Taekwondo Association, signaling a new era for the martial art in the region. The 2008 Beijing Bronze medallist was confirmed as the chairman of the organization’s newly formed 13-member executive board, a body tasked with identifying and refining athletic potential at the local level. The formal induction ceremony was presided over by the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Ikechukwu Emetu, who ratified the leadership team responsible for the sport’s regional trajectory.
Chukwumerije, a celebrated figure in African taekwondo history, utilized the occasion to outline an ambitious roadmap for his tenure. He emphasized that his primary objective is to restore the state’s reputation as a powerhouse in the Nigerian sporting landscape. By leveraging his extensive international experience, the former continental champion intends to implement structural changes that will facilitate the transition of raw talent from local communities to national prominence.
Following the inaugural proceedings, the new chairman voiced his appreciation for the appointment and reiterated his board’s dedication to achieving excellence.
“We promise to give our best to make Abia one of the best sporting states in the country,” Chukwumerije declared.
Central to his strategy is a robust focus on grassroots initiatives. Chukwumerije pointed out that the educational system will be the primary engine for this growth, with plans to integrate scouting and training programs directly into schools. By establishing this foundational pipeline, the association aims to ensure that the next generation of competitive fighters is identified early and provided with the professional guidance necessary to reach the pinnacle of the sport.
