Manchester United icon Gary Neville has proposed that his former employers should contemplate sanctioning a transfer for Mason Mount during the upcoming summer window, provided the club can secure a replacement with superior positional versatility. The former captain’s assessment followed a high-octane 3-2 victory for the Red Devils over Liverpool on Sunday, during which he highlighted the necessity for a squad overhaul to maintain competitive momentum. Neville identified four essential areas that require immediate attention from the recruitment department before considering any secondary tactical maneuvers.
The Sky Sports pundit emphasized that defensive reinforcements and midfield depth must be the primary focus for the technical staff. He expressed specific concern regarding the physical toll on existing personnel and the lack of specialized cover in the heart of the defense. During a detailed analysis on his podcast, Neville articulated his vision for the club’s ideal transfer activity:
“I think United need a left-back for next season because Luke Shaw has played every game this year, and he may struggle,” Neville explained. “They need a centre-back, 100%, and they need two midfielders. Those are the four priorities for me.”
Beyond these fundamental requirements, Neville suggested that the club could optimize their roster by exploring a trade or sale of Mount if the move facilitates the acquisition of a more adaptable player capable of operating across multiple roles in the final third and the center of the park.
“Look, if after that you could sort of trade Mason Mount for someone who can play in and out and can be a bit more flexible across the midfield and forward line, then I would say go for a fifth,” he added.
As the summer window approaches, Neville’s blueprint suggests that while individual talent like Mount remains part of the conversation, the club’s priority must be building a robust and flexible foundation to support a more demanding domestic and continental schedule next season.
