A Canada-based Nigerian doctor, Arinze Onwumelu, has advised singer Portable to undergo a medical brain examination following his recent celebrity boxing match with Carter Efe.
The bout, which took place in Lagos over the weekend, ended with Portable on the losing side and quickly generated widespread reactions online. The fight drew significant attention from fans and public figures, with clips circulating across social media platforms.
In a video shared online on Monday, Onwumelu, also known as Dr Zo, recommended that the singer undergo a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan to assess for possible internal head injuries.
He expressed concern over the nature of punches delivered during the match, noting that repeated blows to sensitive areas of the head could lead to serious medical conditions, including subdural haematoma.
According to the doctor, exhibition matches are intended primarily for entertainment and should not expose participants to significant harm. He questioned whether adequate safety measures were in place during the fight.
Onwumelu further urged individuals close to Portable to ensure he receives proper medical evaluation, warning that undetected damage could pose long-term health risks.
He also called on organisers of similar events to prioritise safety by making protective headgear mandatory, aiming to reduce the likelihood of serious injuries in future celebrity boxing matches.
Portable had earlier expressed confidence ahead of the fight, citing previous victories over other entertainers. However, the latest bout has shifted attention to concerns about safety and medical oversight in such events.
