US rapper Kanye West is scheduled to perform in Albania’s capital, Tirana, in July, even as his shows in other parts of Europe face cancellations linked to ongoing controversies.
Albania’s Culture Minister, Blendi Gonxhe, confirmed that the concert is set for July 11, describing it as a significant step in positioning the country as a hub for major cultural events.
The rapper, also known as Ye, has drawn criticism in recent years over a series of inflammatory remarks, including statements perceived as supportive of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler and other antisemitic comments. He has attributed some of his behaviour to living with bipolar disorder.
These controversies have had direct consequences for his European tour plans. Authorities in the United Kingdom blocked his entry, leading to the cancellation of a planned multi-day music festival in London where he was billed to perform.
Similarly, a scheduled concert in Poland was scrapped. Polish Culture Minister Marta Cienkowska stated that the rapper’s actions were incompatible with the country’s values, particularly in relation to references linked to Nazism.
Despite the backlash, Albanian authorities are proceeding with preparations for the Tirana event. Organisers are reportedly constructing a temporary venue designed to host up to 60,000 attendees.
The concert is expected to draw international attention, marking one of the largest entertainment events planned in the country this year.
