Towards improving safety and regulatory compliance in Nigeria’s electricity sector, the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) have reaffirmed their commitment to stronger institutional collaboration.
This collaboration is contained in a Statement by Ama Umoren, Head Public Affairs, Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA).
It was the focus of a recent strategic courtesy visit by Engr. Olusegun M. Adesayo, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NEMSA, to the leadership of NERC in Abuja.
The high-level engagement aimed to deepen cooperation in critical areas affecting the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, also known as NESI.
During the visit, Engr. Adesayo highlighted key areas of concern, including electrical safety enforcement, technical inspection, and the certification of installations.
He emphasized the need for immediate action in addressing persistent safety challenges within the sector, such as electrical accidents, substandard installations, and equipment failures.
Engr. Adesayo stated, “Stronger synergy between both institutions is essential to addressing these challenges and ensuring compliance with approved technical regulations.”
He further stressed the importance of harmonized data management and coordinated incident investigations as vital components in driving evidence-based regulatory actions.
In response, Dr. Musiliu Olalekan Oseni, Chairman of NERC, welcomed the initiative and expressed the Commission’s commitment to working closely with NEMSA.
Underlining the ongoing reforms in the electricity sector, he noted that the decentralization of regulatory responsibilities under the Electricity Act calls for enhanced inter-agency coordination to maintain uniform technical standards nationwide.
The partnership between NEMSA and NERC is poised to improve operational efficiency and ensure that the Nigerian power sector adheres to both national and global best practices.
This strategic collaboration marks a crucial step in the quest for a safe, reliable, and sustainable electricity supply across Nigeria.
