Nigeria’s aviation sector is witnessing a strategic infrastructure push as the Akwa Ibom State Government positions the Victor Attah International Airport as a major aviation hub within the Gulf of Guinea, backed by extensive upgrades and modern facilities.
Speaking in an interview on ARISE News, Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, pointed out the scale of development at the airport, describing it as a purpose-built, high-tech aviation center designed to compete at an international level.
“The facility is top-notch, first-class; I think it is the best airport terminal in this country as we speak today,” he said.
Umanah explained that the transformation of the airport goes beyond a new terminal, encompassing a comprehensive upgrade of aviation infrastructure to support increased traffic and international operations.
“So much has gone into it… from the completion of the new terminal building to the completion of the second runway and taxiway, a new apron, and the building of a brand-new aviation village,” he said.
According to him, the newly constructed international terminal represents a significant shift from the previous temporary facility, offering advanced technological features designed to enhance passenger experience and efficiency.
“It is the only airport that will have a functional self-check-in machine,” he said.
He added that the airport is equipped with modern surveillance systems and automated processes aimed at reducing delays and improving operational flow for both domestic and international passengers.
Umanah said the development is part of a broader vision by the state government to establish a strong aviation ecosystem anchored on infrastructure, connectivity, and regional relevance.
“The vision… is to build a big-time aviation hub out of the Victor Attah International Airport,” he stated.
He emphasised that the airport’s strategic location within the Gulf of Guinea positions it as a potential gateway for regional and international travel, particularly for the South-South region of Nigeria.
“The vision of the Governor in launching an aviation hub within the Gulf of Guinea will begin to take effect,” he said.
Beyond passenger convenience, the upgraded facilities are expected to support aviation workers and improve overall efficiency, with the aviation village providing accommodation and operational support services.
“It’s just an amazing thing to have a brand-new hub within the airport system,” Umanah added.
He concluded that the focus on infrastructure development is central to the state’s long-term aviation strategy, with the upgraded airport expected to drive connectivity, economic activity, and regional integration.
