The Delta State Government has reacted strongly to the alleged killing of 28-year-old Mine Ogidi, with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori demanding accountability.
The governor’s response follows widespread outrage over the April 26 incident, which drew national attention after reports and video footage surfaced days later. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, Oborevwori described the act as “barbaric, unlawful, and a grave violation of the sanctity of human life”, while extending condolences to the victim’s family in Ujevwu, Udu Local Government Area.
He also acknowledged steps taken by the Nigeria Police Force, including the reported dismissal and planned prosecution of officers implicated in the incident. The governor said such actions are necessary to ensure accountability and rebuild public confidence in law enforcement.
Oborevwori called for a thorough investigation into everyone connected to the case, stressing that justice must be both done and seen to be done. He assured the bereaved family of the state government’s support and pledged that the matter would be pursued to its logical conclusion, while urging residents to remain calm and law-abiding.
Meanwhile, Senior lawyer, Kunle Edun (SAN), has raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding the killing, describing it as suspicious. He said it is important to determine whether the officer involved acted alone or on instruction.
Edun, who is offering pro bono legal services to the victim’s family, stressed that allegations such as unlawful possession of firearms do not justify the use of lethal force, noting that due process must be followed in all cases. He further described the incident as troubling, particularly as it reportedly occurred within a police facility, an environment expected to guarantee the safety of citizens.
The senior lawyer added that he is engaging with police authorities in Delta State and expressed confidence that the matter will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted, with his legal team committed to securing justice for the victim’s family.
