The Nigerian Army has expressed sorrow over the death of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Abdulsamad Jamiu, who was killed during a security operation in Abuja.
The incident occurred in the early hours of April 25 at Shagari Estate in the Dei-Dei area, when troops of the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group responded to a distress call over an armed robbery attack.
According to a statement on Sunday by the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Olawuyi Odunola, the armed robbers fleeing the scene opened fire on the responding troops, triggering a brief exchange of gunfire.
During the operation, the corps member was reportedly caught in the crossfire and later died from injuries sustained in the incident.
The Guards Brigade described the situation as fluid and highly volatile, noting that troops were deployed to repel the attackers and protect residents at the time of the confrontation.
The statement said the loss was deeply regretted by the brigade, describing it as a painful development for all personnel involved.
It added that the remains of the deceased had been handed over to relevant civil authorities and deposited at Kubwa General Hospital.
The Brigade Commander extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the NYSC, and others affected, while confirming that a thorough investigation had been launched to determine the circumstances of the incident.
Authorities also reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and property in the Federal Capital Territory and said operational procedures would be reviewed to enhance civilian safety.
Residents were urged to remain calm and continue cooperating with security agencies.
