The leadership of Akwa United has formally addressed the club’s inability to secure a return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), describing the outcome of their recent campaign as a significant disappointment. Known as the “Promise Keepers,” the Uyo-based side concluded their season as the second-placed team in Conference A of the Nigeria National League (NNL), falling just short of the coveted top spot required for elevation.
The promotion slot for the group was instead claimed by Sporting Lagos, who successfully navigated the competitive race to earn their place in the top flight. Despite the frustration of missing their primary objective, the Akwa United hierarchy has emphasized the positive strides made by the squad throughout a grueling season, highlighting the tenacity displayed by the players and coaching staff alike.
In a formal communication regarding the season’s conclusion, Club Chairman Joseph Eno acknowledged the bittersweet nature of the team’s performance. While the ultimate goal was not achieved, he commended the dedication shown by the organization until the very end of the schedule.
“As a club, we are disappointed but proud of the effort put into this promotion race,” Chairman Eno stated. “We fought until the final whistle of the league season.”
The focus for the Promise Keepers now transitions toward a period of evaluation and restructuring as they prepare for another attempt at returning to the elite tier of Nigerian football. By maintaining a balance of pride in their competitive spirit and a critical eye on their shortcomings, the club aims to utilize this setback as a catalyst for future success in the NNL.
