Afrobeat musician Femi Kuti has confirmed that the music catalogue of his late father, Fela Kuti, remains under the full ownership of the family.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Entertainment Tonight programme, the Grammy-nominated artist explained that while the catalogue is occasionally licensed, it has never been sold.
According to Femi, the body of work is managed through Fela’s estate, which is controlled by members of the family. This structure allows them to grant temporary usage rights while maintaining long-term authority over the music.
He noted that the decision to retain ownership was largely influenced by his elder sister, whom he described as the primary custodian of Fela’s legacy. Her strong opposition to selling the catalogue, he said, played a key role in shaping the family’s approach.
Femi added that the family believes holding on to the catalogue safeguards both its cultural value and financial benefits for future generations.
By keeping control within the estate, he said, the family can continue to manage how Fela’s music is used and ensure that his legacy remains protected.
