As preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has issued a stern warning to broadcasters, cautioning against unethical practices and threatening sanctions for violations of the broadcasting code.
In a statement circulated on social media on Friday, the Commission said some broadcast platforms are increasingly being used in ways that undermine their responsibility to inform the public with accuracy, balance, and professionalism.
“As we approach the 2027 General Elections, the Commission hereby notifies all broadcasters and stakeholders that it will enforce strict and uncompromised compliance with every provision of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, particularly those relating to fairness, balance, accuracy, hate speech, incitement, and respect for constitutional bodies”, the NBC said.
The Commission warned presenters and content producers against expressing personal opinions as fact, or engaging in conduct that compromises neutrality during broadcasts.
It also cautioned against intimidating or bullying guests, denying opposing voices a fair hearing, or otherwise undermining editorial balance on air.
Citing provisions of the broadcasting code, the NBC stressed that broadcast platforms must not be used for hate speech, personal attacks, or content capable of inciting disorder along political lines. It added that broadcasters carry a non-transferable responsibility to exercise editorial judgment, including during live programming.
The statement further noted that strict compliance with the Nigeria Broadcasting Code will be enforced across all news, current affairs, and political programmes.
“Broadcasters must ensure fairness, balance, accuracy, and the right of reply in all content. Inflammatory, divisive, or unsubstantiated broadcasts will attract regulatory sanctions”, it added.
The Commission said it will intensify monitoring of broadcast content as the country moves closer to the 2027 general elections, warning that it will not hesitate to apply sanctions where violations are detected.
