The golf section of Ikoyi Club 1938 served as the backdrop for a high-stakes executive showdown this past Friday, where Tony Unuavworho claimed the top spot at the 2026 Africa Re Golf Tournament for CEOs. In a field characterized by intense competition and narrow margins, Unuavworho demonstrated superior consistency to navigate the course and secure the prestigious title.
The champion’s winning performance was anchored by a total of 38 stableford points, providing him a two-point cushion over his closest rival. Ancy Okoebor finished as the first runner-up after tallying 36 points, narrowly edging out Obinna Okwoji, who also posted a 36-point score but was relegated to third place following a countback.
Reflecting on his success during the trophy presentation, Unuavworho highlighted the blend of rigorous training and serendipity that contributed to his top-tier finish. He also took a moment to recognize the corporate support that made the gathering possible.
“I want to use this opportunity to thank Africa Reinsurance Corporation, the sponsor of this tournament. I wish them well and pray that they continue to be successful,” he remarked, while candidly acknowledging that luck played a role in his triumph.
This year’s event marked the third iteration of the tournament and was a centerpiece of the broader celebrations surrounding the 50th anniversary of the Africa Reinsurance Corporation. The competition successfully brought together a distinguished assembly of elite golfers and industry leaders.
Temitope Akinowa, the Regional Director for Anglophone West Africa at the corporation, expressed the organization’s satisfaction with the tournament’s execution. She emphasized that such sporting initiatives remain integral to the company’s mission of fostering continental economic development and social engagement through athletics.
