The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused authorities of denying it access to major public venues in Abuja ahead of its national convention scheduled for April 14, 2026.
In a post shared on X on Monday, Kola Ologbondiyan said the party was unable to secure a venue less than 24 hours to the event, despite making formal requests to relevant government offices.
According to Ologbondiyan, the party had written to the office of Nyesom Wike, seeking approval to use Eagle Square. He noted that although the letter was acknowledged, the party did not receive any official response.
He added that the ADC also approached the federal ministry of sports development for permission to use the velodrome at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, but the request was declined without explanation.
The party further alleged that several privately owned event centres in Abuja rejected its booking requests due to fears of potential backlash from government authorities.
Despite the setbacks, Ologbondiyan said the party remained determined to hold its convention as planned within the Federal Capital Territory.
A letter dated April 7 and signed by Chinedu Idigo showed that the ADC had formally applied for the use of Eagle Square for what it described as a non-elective convention.
Idigo said the event is expected to draw delegates, stakeholders, and observers from across Nigeria’s 36 states and the FCT, noting that the venue was chosen for its capacity, accessibility, and security.
“I assure you that all necessary protocols will be strictly adhered to, including compliance with security guidelines, facility management rules, and restoration of the venue to its original condition after use,” the letter read.
He also stated that the party was prepared to meet all financial obligations required for the use of the facility. However, the request was ultimately declined, with no official reason provided.
Following the development, the ADC announced that the convention would now be held at Rainbow Event Center, describing it as a central and accessible alternative for participants expected from across the country.
