The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has opened an investigation into reports of possible civilian casualties following an airstrike in Jilli, Borno State.
In a statement, NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the incident was reported to have occurred on Saturday during an operation in the area.
He noted that preliminary information suggested the strike may have affected a local market, raising concerns over potential civilian harm.
According to him, the Chief of Air Staff has ordered the immediate activation of the Civilian Harm Incident and Investigation Cell to examine the circumstances surrounding the operation.
The team has since been deployed to Jilli on a fact-finding mission to verify the claims and gather relevant evidence.
Ejodame stressed that the Air Force treats all allegations of civilian harm with seriousness, adding that the protection of innocent lives remains central to its operations.
He reaffirmed the service’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, and transparency in the conduct of its missions.
He also said the Air Force would collaborate with relevant authorities and community stakeholders to establish the facts on the ground.
While investigations continue, the NAF urged the public and media to avoid speculation and allow due process to take its course.
The statement added that credible concerns would be thoroughly addressed in line with the Air Force’s operational standards and rules of engagement.
The development comes amid growing public attention on the conduct of military operations in the North-East, where counterinsurgency efforts have continued.
