Amid concerns over civilian casualties, former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has defended the recent airstrike on Jilli Market, describing it as a necessary strike on a terrorist stronghold.
In a statement, Buratai said the action was driven by credible intelligence indicating that Boko Haram and ISWAP elements were using the market as a base for logistics and coordinated activities.
While acknowledging reports of civilian casualties, he expressed deep regret over the loss of innocent lives, noting that such outcomes remain a painful reality in conflict situations.
Despite this, he praised the Nigerian Air Force and intelligence units for what he termed professionalism and bravery in carrying out the mission.
Buratai maintained that Jilli Market has, over time, developed a reputation as a logistics hub for insurgents, despite repeated shutdowns and military interventions.
He recalled previous operations in the area, including engagements during Operation LAST HOLD in 2018, where troops confronted insurgents in multiple encounters.
According to him, some civilians have continued to interact with and supply insurgents, enabling them to sustain their activities in the region.
He explained that such situations often complicate military operations, as terrorists blend into civilian populations to evade detection.
Buratai stressed that while the military prioritises civilian safety, decisive action becomes inevitable when locations are persistently exploited by terrorist groups.
He urged residents in affected communities, including Geidam, Gubio, Damasak, and Ngamdu, to avoid markets linked to insurgent activities, warning that such areas remain potential targets during operations.
Calling for continued public cooperation, he emphasised that collective support for security forces is crucial to defeating insurgency.
Buratai added that while the nation mourns those lost, sustained resolve and unity remain essential in the fight to restore peace in the region.
