Health authorities in Lagos have raised concern over rising Lassa fever cases, prompting the activation of preventive measures and a statewide public health campaign.
The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, revealed the state government has activated emergency response structures, strengthened surveillance, and stepped up training for medical personnel as part of containment efforts.
He warned that urban population density increases vulnerability to faster spread, even in areas where the disease is not routinely recorded.
Residents have been urged to maintain basic hygiene practices and seek early medical attention, with officials stressing that timely response remains critical to limiting further spread.
Abayomi said Nigeria is facing an uptick in infections, with over 660 confirmed cases and 167 deaths recorded between January and mid-March 2026 across 22 states and 93 local government areas.
He noted growing concern over infections among healthcare workers, with 38 cases and three deaths reported, describing the situation as a warning sign for frontline health systems.
