Allegations circulating online against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN) have been dismissed by the electoral body as fabricated and malicious, with the Commission rejecting claims that he is partisan and describing them as baseless.
According to the commission, the reports originated from fake social media accounts created by cybercriminals to mislead the public and defraud unsuspecting users.
INEC clarified that the Chairman does not operate any personal account on X (formerly Twitter) and has never engaged in partisan commentary or political activity in any form.
It said the alleged posts were a deliberate attempt to undermine his integrity and the neutrality of the Commission, especially at a time when preparations for electoral reforms and upcoming elections are ongoing.
The Commission warned that cybercriminals have continued to create impersonation accounts using the Chairman’s identity, noting that several similar cases had already been reported to security agencies.
INEC said it is working with security and cyber-intelligence agencies to track and prosecute those responsible, stressing that identity theft and online impersonation are offences under the Cybercrimes Act.
Members of the public were urged to disregard fake accounts and rely only on official INEC communication channels for verified information.
The statement reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to delivering free, fair and credible elections in Nigeria.
