Vice President Kashim Shettima on Saturday visited Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, to commiserate with the Nigerian military and the state government following a deadly attack on troops in Benisheikh.
The assault, which has been described as a major setback in ongoing counterinsurgency operations in the North-East, claimed the lives of several officers and soldiers, including Brigadier General Oseni Braimah. Shettima was received on arrival by the Theatre Commander, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, alongside other senior military officers and government officials.
Delivering a message on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, the Vice President expressed deep sorrow over the incident, noting that the President shares in the grief of the bereaved families and the nation at large.
He extended condolences to the officers and personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces and allied troops, paying tribute to those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The Vice President acknowledged the sacrifices made by the fallen soldiers, describing their service as a testament to their commitment to safeguarding the country.
Despite the losses, Shettima urged resilience, expressing hope that peace and stability would ultimately prevail over violence and extremism.
He also reassured that the Federal Government remains committed to supporting the armed forces, as well as the families of fallen personnel and communities affected by insecurity in Borno State and other parts of the country.
