Afrobeats singer Charles Chibueze Chukwu, widely known as Crayon, has spoken candidly about a difficult period in his life when he battled mental health challenges triggered by mounting personal and professional pressures.
During a recent livestream with Carter Efe, the artist revealed that the strain he faced in 2022 led to his hospitalisation, where he underwent an extended period of therapy.
Crayon explained that expectations from his family, combined with the intense competition within the music industry, significantly affected his emotional well-being at the time.
According to him, the desire to succeed and meet responsibilities became overwhelming, ultimately impacting his mental health.
Reflecting on that phase, the singer noted that his recovery marked a turning point in his career. Following his therapy, he went on to release some of his popular tracks, including “Ijo Labalaba” and “Overloading.”
“In 2022, I was dealing with a lot mentally due to different kinds of pressure — from family, from the industry, and the need to succeed,” he said. “I had to be hospitalised for therapy. After that, I came back and released ‘Labalaba’ and ‘Overloading.’”
His revelation adds to ongoing conversations around mental health awareness within the entertainment industry, where artists continue to face increasing scrutiny and expectations.
