The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has shifted its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise to a date after the 2027 general elections.
The Commission announced the development on Friday through the Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, following a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).
According to Haruna, the decision was reached after the proposed exercise was reviewed at the meeting held on April 10, 2026.
He said the Commission agreed that the exercise, originally designed to update and verify voter records across the country, would now be conducted after the 2027 polls.
Haruna explained that the revalidation exercise is intended to strengthen the National Register of Voters by correcting errors, removing duplicate entries, and ensuring only eligible voters remain on the database.
He added that it would also have given registered voters the opportunity to confirm or update their personal details.
INEC reiterated its commitment to maintaining a credible voter register and delivering transparent, free, and fair elections nationwide.
