The attack on Agena community in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State has recorded an increase in fatalities after new bodies were discovered.
Initial reports confirmed nine deaths on Sunday afternoon following the Saturday morning assault, which also left one person injured. The attackers reportedly razed houses, food barns, and a local market, causing widespread destruction in the area.
A community leader and mobiliser, Christopher Gbasha, who was part of the search efforts, confirmed on Monday that two additional bodies were recovered, bringing the total death toll to 11.
He added that residents have since fled the community over fear of further attacks, while a few youths remain behind to provide security surveillance.
Gbasha also noted that officials of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency visited the area to assess the situation, document the level of destruction, and take inventory of affected properties.
He said the community is currently calm but largely deserted, as displaced residents remain away for safety.
