Fresh pressure is mounting on the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as Joash Amupitan faces calls for his removal from the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) over alleged misconduct.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the group expressed dissatisfaction with both the Federal Government and the INEC chairman, accusing authorities of failing to respond to concerns raised by sections of the Muslim community.
MURIC claimed that a legal brief reportedly authored by Amupitan had been cited in international discussions portraying Nigeria in a negative light on sensitive religious issues. The organisation described the development as troubling and called for accountability.
The group further argued that the continued silence from relevant authorities has heightened distrust, particularly among Muslim stakeholders, who it said now question the neutrality of the electoral body.
MURIC also raised concerns about proposed electoral processes, including voter registration activities, alleging they could disadvantage certain groups if not properly managed.
While urging the Federal Government to act, the organisation maintained that stepping aside would help restore confidence in the electoral system and ease growing tensions.
The statement reflects ongoing debates around trust, inclusivity, and leadership within Nigeria’s electoral framework, as stakeholders continue to call for transparency and fairness ahead of future elections.
