Manchester United icon Ryan Giggs has called upon his former club to aggressively pursue Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson during the upcoming summer transfer window. The 52-year-old former winger believes that the Red Devils must act decisively to reinforce their midfield engine room, especially with the anticipated departures of veteran Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte at the conclusion of the current campaign.
During a recent guest appearance on the Webby & O’Neill platform, Giggs articulated that the center of the pitch represents the most urgent area for recruitment. With the squad facing a potential void in leadership and physicality, he argued that the club cannot afford to enter the new season without significant reinforcements.
Reflecting on the current state of the roster, Giggs noted: “It looks like Mainoo is going to stay, Casemiro and Ugarte are going to go, and we need to strengthen midfield without a shadow of a doubt.”
Giggs, known for his appreciation of technical elegance, highlighted Wharton as a particularly seamless fit for the Old Trafford environment. Pointing to the player’s preferred foot and composure, he remarked: “I would not argue with Wharton—he looks to me like a Man United player.”
The Welshman was similarly impressed by the consistency of Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, describing him as “a solid player who plays every game.” Giggs went on to envision several tactical setups that could provide the club with long-term stability and creative flair.
“I can see a Wharton and Mainoo, an Anderson and Wharton—I can see all of those scenarios at Manchester United. We need two midfielders,” he concluded, emphasizing that the club’s success hinges on securing a versatile and durable midfield pairing.
