The Lagos State Government has rolled out a detailed traffic diversion plan ahead of the annual Fanti Carnival, scheduled for Monday, April 6, 2026, at Tafawa Balewa Square.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Transportation, several major roads surrounding the carnival venue will experience temporary restrictions to ensure smooth vehicular flow and safety during the festivities.
Key roads affected include King George V Road near Mobil Filling Station, Flag House inbound TBS, Force Road inbound TBS, Onikan Roundabout inbound TBS, and Waterboy Roundabout by Old Defence House. Additionally, all connecting routes to Moloney Road, including Military Road by Old Defence Building, Ajasa Street, Boyle Street, and Hawley Street, will be closed for the duration of the event.
To minimize inconvenience, the government has designated alternative car parks for public use. These include the Yoruba Lawn Tennis Club Car Park, Zone 2 Car Park opposite Island Club along King George V Road, Museum Kitchen Car Park, and The Bell Car Park by Island Maternity.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, urged motorists to plan ahead and follow instructions from traffic officials deployed across the affected areas. Personnel from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority will be stationed at all diversion points to manage traffic and assist road users.
The Lagos Fanti Carnival celebrates the city’s Afro-Brazilian heritage and attracts large crowds, prompting the need for comprehensive traffic management measures around Lagos Island. Authorities advised residents and visitors to exercise patience and use designated parking facilities to avoid congestion.
