Nigerian singer Omah Lay has raised concerns about the declining quality of Nigerian music and Afrobeats in recent years.
In an interview with ViewsFrance, the “Soso” hitmaker said many artists are prioritizing fame and quick money over musical depth and creativity. According to him, this trend is negatively impacting the genre and African culture, particularly abroad.
“Nigerian Music is drifting towards a place where artists are not putting so much effort into the art anymore,” Omah Lay said.
He added, “Most artists are just playing with music these days and really not trying to improve the sound and the whole creativity around it. It is just quick money, and it is really dipping the audience. The new generation is growing up on that level of music and they are even doing worse.”
While acknowledging Afrobeats’ global rise as a positive development, the singer urged his peers to raise the bar. “I just wish we could strive to raise the bar a little more with the craft,” he said.
Omah Lay’s comments highlight ongoing discussions within Nigeria’s music industry about balancing commercial success with artistic integrity and the long-term growth of Afrobeats on the international stage.
