Yusuf Kurawa urges patience amid economic pressures, defends government borrowing, and expresses confidence in Nigeria’s fiscal direction…..
Nigeria’s fiscal challenges remain evident, but early signs suggest that ongoing reforms by the Federal Government are beginning to take effect, according to a senior official at the Budget Office of the Federation.
Speaking in Kano, the Director of Expenditure (Social), Yusuf Kurawa, acknowledged the country’s current economic strain but maintained that the situation is not unique to Nigeria.
He noted that many economies across the world are grappling with similar financial pressures, urging Nigerians to remain patient as reforms initiated under President Bola Tinubu begin to take hold.
“Nigeria, like many countries, is facing fiscal challenges. But reforms are ongoing, and we are already seeing signs of improvement,” he said.
Borrowing ‘Not a Crime’
Addressing concerns over continued government borrowing particularly following the removal of fuel subsidies, Kurawa defended the practice, describing it as a standard tool in economic management globally.
According to him, the key issue is not borrowing itself, but how effectively such funds are managed.
“There is nothing inherently wrong with borrowing. What matters is proper management, and the government is on top of the situation,” he stated.
He reiterated that authorities remain committed to prudent fiscal policies aimed at stabilising the economy and ensuring long-term growth.
Budget as a National Compass
Kurawa also highlighted the critical role of the national budget, describing it as one of the most important policy instruments in governance, second only to the constitution.
He explained that the Budget Office of the Federation plays a central role in shaping and coordinating the budget process, ensuring that government spending aligns with development priorities.
“The budget guides national development. It is handled with utmost care and professionalism,” he said.
He further expressed confidence in the leadership of the agency under Director-General Tanimu Yakubu, whom he described as a seasoned technocrat with deep expertise in fiscal management.
Call for Public Confidence
Amid public concerns about economic management, Kurawa urged Nigerians not to misinterpret the budgetary process, insisting that due diligence and accountability remain at the core of government planning.
“Everything is on course. Nigerians should have confidence in the system,” he added.
