Security concerns in Jos, the Plateau State capital, have prompted the University of Jos to order the immediate evacuation of students from its hostels following renewed reports of violence in parts of the city.
The decision, announced on Wednesday, comes after heightened tension in several communities within the state capital, prompting fears over the safety of students and university personnel.
In a statement signed by the Deputy Registrar, Information and Public Relations, Emmanuel Madugu, on behalf of the Registrar, the institution said the move followed a reassessment of the prevailing security situation in Plateau State.
The university outlined a phased evacuation process, stating that students whose parents or guardians reside within Jos and nearby areas were expected to vacate the hostels from 3 p.m. on Wednesday, while those whose families live outside the city would leave on Thursday.
Management further disclosed that the evacuation exercise would be supported by the Plateau State Government. It noted that Governor Caleb Mutfwang approved the use of vehicles beyond curfew hours to ensure a smooth and safe movement of students.
According to the statement, security has also been reinforced around university hostels and facilities to safeguard lives and property during the evacuation period.
The university added that the Vice-Chancellor has assured stakeholders that additional measures are being considered to guarantee the safety of the university community amid the ongoing situation.
The development follows a recent deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area, where gunmen reportedly killed several residents in a late-night assault.
Eyewitnesses said armed attackers stormed the Gari Ya Waye settlement between 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., shooting sporadically and forcing residents to flee for safety. Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang later confirmed that 28 people were killed in the incident, describing it as a senseless attack on innocent citizens.
Many of the injured were taken to the Jos University Teaching Hospital for medical treatment.
Earlier on Wednesday, distress calls had circulated on social media, with students and residents appealing for urgent security intervention amid fears of being trapped in hostels during the unrest.
The University of Jos Alumni Association also expressed concern over the escalating tension, warning of risks to students, staff, and residents in Jos North Local Government Area.
