Nigeria and Chad are stepping up collaboration on regional security, with renewed commitments to combat terrorism and banditry across the Lake Chad area.
President Tinubu made the pledge in Abuja on Thursday while receiving Chadian leader Mahamat Idriss Déby at the Presidential Villa, marking a key diplomatic engagement focused on regional stability.
Both leaders held a joint press briefing where they discussed evolving security threats and renewed strategies to counter terrorism within the sub-region.
Describing the visit as significant, Tinubu said it provided an opportunity to deepen bilateral relations and reinforce joint efforts against insecurity.
“Our discussions centred on the security challenges facing our region. Together, we are committed to eliminating acts of terror and ensuring the safety and sovereignty of our nations”, he said.
He noted that Nigeria and Chad remain central partners in the Multinational Joint Task Force, which continues to play a critical role in counterterrorism operations around the Lake Chad region.
Tinubu emphasised that both countries share a responsibility to secure their borders and protect their citizens, stressing that sustained cooperation is essential for lasting peace.
He also highlighted the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and Chad, adding that both nations are working to build on existing ties to promote stability and development.
According to the President, improved security in the region would also boost trade, economic cooperation, and cross-border integration.
He further revealed that discussions extended beyond bilateral issues to broader regional collaboration involving neighbouring countries, including Niger.
