In a poignant display of athletic resilience, Iraq has officially secured the 48th and final berth for the upcoming World Cup. The Lions of Mesopotamia achieved this milestone by overcoming Bolivia in a 2-1 intercontinental playoff victory staged in Mexico on Tuesday. This landmark success ends a four-decade absence from the global stage, marking the nation’s first qualification since the 1986 tournament, which was coincidentally also hosted on Mexican soil.
The achievement is particularly remarkable given the immense geopolitical hurdles facing the squad. Preparations for the decisive fixture were severely hampered by escalating regional instability in the Middle East, characterized by recent military escalations. The logistical path to the match was equally taxing; the majority of the roster endured a grueling seventy-two-hour transit from Baghdad, which necessitated an initial overland crossing into Jordan before they could depart for North America.
Despite these challenges, Graham Arnold’s side displayed remarkable composure from the opening whistle. The Australian tactician had previously advocated for a postponement of the match due to the domestic crisis, yet his players showed no signs of fatigue during a dominant start. The deadlock was broken in the ninth minute by Luton Town forward Ali Al-Hamadi—a player whose personal history is deeply intertwined with his nation’s struggles, having relocated to Liverpool as an infant during the 2003 conflict.
Iraq’s attacking momentum continued throughout the contest, with midfielder Amir Al-Ammari nearly doubling the lead via a spectacular free-kick that required a fingertip save from Bolivian keeper Guillermo Viscarra. Eventually, a second goal from Aymen Hussein solidified the historic win. With their place now confirmed, Iraq enters the tournament as part of Group I, where they are scheduled to test their resolve against France, Senegal, and Norway.
