Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand has suggested that Arsenal’s current manager, Mikel Arteta, is utilizing psychological maneuvers reminiscent of Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure at Old Trafford to secure a Premier League trophy. With the North London side currently holding a commanding nine-point lead over Manchester City with only seven matches remaining, the pressure to maintain their momentum has reached a critical juncture.
The speculation follows a string of strategic withdrawals from international duty by various Arsenal stars, citing minor injuries and physical knocks shortly after their League Cup final defeat to Manchester City. Ferdinand, sharing his insights via his YouTube platform, posited that these absences are likely the result of direct internal directives aimed at prioritizing the domestic league title over international friendlies.
Drawing parallels to his own experiences under the legendary Scotsman at United, Ferdinand expressed his belief that Arteta has likely issued a stern ultimatum to his squad. He noted that the urgency to end Arsenal’s title drought has seemingly led to a “club over country” mandate, ensuring the roster remains physically fresh for the decisive final stretch of the season.
“It’s definitely the manager saying listen this is the first win we could get in terms of the Premier League, we have to be ready, we need your energy, this is a friendly for your national team,” Ferdinand said.
“I’ve heard this speech from Sir Alex Ferguson so I understand it. The guys have just gone. This is our priority, we need to win the league.”
