The International Communication Association Nigeria Chapter has concluded its first national conference with a focus on global communication trends, research perspectives, and strategic collaboration for Africa’s development.
The conference, held at Nile University of Nigeria, brought together communication scholars, practitioners, institutional leaders, and ICA representatives from India, Indonesia, and Kenya.
Participants examined evolving global communication dynamics and their implications for Nigeria and the African continent, while emphasising the need to strengthen the media and communication landscape.
Delegates at the conference, themed “Global Shifts in Communication and Implications for Africa,” called on young African scholars to actively engage, innovate, and collaborate with global institutions to enhance their impact.
A Senior Lecturer at Federal University Otuoke, Timothy Onyejelem, highlighted the growing role of digital entrepreneurs in Nigeria’s creative industry.
He noted that local content creators are increasingly producing globally competitive material, positioning Nigeria as a key player in the global creator economy.
According to him, with over 100 million internet users, Nigeria remains one of Africa’s most dynamic digital mark
ets, but stressed the need for creators to move beyond content consumption to mastering digital technologies.
The conference also featured panel discussions on the upcoming first ICA Conference in Africa scheduled for June 4–6, 2026, as well as the third anniversary of ICA Nigeria.
Presentations from participants representing 51 institutions and organisations across Nigeria addressed various sub-themes of the conference.
The event also marked a leadership transition within ICA Nigeria, with Ekaete George handing over to Desmond Okocha as the new chair of the association.
The conference underscored the importance of intellectual exchange and collaboration in positioning Nigeria and Africa as influential players in the global communication space.
