A proposed plan to establish a UK university campus in Nigeria has been rejected by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
ASUU President, Chris Piwuna, made this known during a public lecture organised by the ASUU branch of Sa’adu Zungur University in Bauchi.
He said the plan followed an agreement signed by President Bola Tinubu during a recent visit to the United Kingdom, which includes the establishment of a campus of Coventry University in Nigeria.
Piwuna described the proposal as harmful to Nigeria’s education system, warning that it amounts to “re-colonisation”.
He argued that the UK university is already facing financial challenges, including a budget deficit and declining African student enrolment.
He also questioned the fairness of the arrangement, noting that Nigerians face strict visa restrictions when seeking education abroad, while foreign institutions are being allowed to operate in the country.
According to him, ASUU will resist the plan, insisting it contradicts government restrictions on the establishment of new universities.
“This will not stand. We will fight it”, he said.
