Streaming service Showmax is set to wind down operations, with its content library transitioning to DStv Stream as part of a new strategy by MultiChoice.
In a statement, MultiChoice confirmed that from April 1, 2026, a selection of Showmax Originals and popular titles will be accessible on DStv Stream through a dedicated Showmax section within the app.
The move comes ahead of Showmax’s official closure scheduled for April 30, 2026. According to the company, the transition is designed to ensure that widely acclaimed African productions remain available to viewers across the continent.
Content will be accessible to subscribers on DStv packages including Compact, Compact Plus, and Premium, as well as streaming-only users via the DStv Stream platform.
MultiChoice also disclosed that existing Showmax subscribers will be automatically migrated to the DStv Stream service on the Compact package. These users will retain access to content at no additional cost until May 31, 2026.
The integration brings together on-demand entertainment and live television—including sports—into a single platform, reflecting a broader shift toward unified streaming experiences.
Kemi Omotosho, Chief Executive Officer of MultiChoice Nigeria, said the decision aligns with the company’s long-term digital strategy and evolving audience preferences.
She noted that Showmax played a key role in elevating African storytelling, citing productions such as WURA, Flawsome, Cheta M, and The Real Housewives of Lagos as examples of its impact.
Omotosho added that despite the platform’s closure, MultiChoice remains committed to investing in local content and collaborating with African producers to sustain the growth of the industry.
The transition signals a new phase for streaming under MultiChoice, consolidating its offerings while preserving the legacy of one of Africa’s most influential digital entertainment platforms.
