No fewer than 8,433 delegates are expected to converge on Eagle Square, Abuja, for the 2026 National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in what is shaping up to be one of the party’s most significant political gatherings ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The delegates will be joined by President Bola Tinubu, 31 APC governors, members of the Federal Executive Council, senior party officials, and other stakeholders for the two-day convention scheduled for March 27 and 28.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this during a strategic meeting with journalists at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, where he outlined preparations, logistics, and the party’s communication framework for the convention.
Idris, who serves as Co-Chairman of the Convention’s Media and Publicity Committee, said all arrangements were being fine-tuned to ensure a smooth and successful event, while urging committee members to work collaboratively in projecting the party’s message of unity and internal discipline.
“A great deal of sacrifice is required from everyone involved, in line with the party’s commitment to presenting a united front and effectively communicating our vision to Nigerians,” he said.
He stressed that the APC must continue to demonstrate strong internal democratic principles, noting that party members are expected to reflect the leadership values championed by President Tinubu.
“As party members, we must embody one of the defining attributes of our president—commitment to democratic ideals and institutional strength,” Idris added.
According to him, the convention marks another important phase in the APC’s effort to consolidate its structures and deepen internal democratic processes ahead of future electoral contests.
The party has already indicated that it will adopt a consensus method in selecting its national leadership during the convention.
This position was reaffirmed by the Assistant Secretary for Media and Publicity, Mary Ikoku, who stated during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily that while consensus has been agreed upon for national offices, decisions on elective positions during party primaries may differ depending on prevailing political realities across states and constituencies.
Thursday’s preparatory meeting brought together APC governors, members of the 2026 National Convention Central Coordination Committee, its chairman and vice chairman, as well as other top party stakeholders.
Among key government officials present were the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo; the Minister of Art, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga; and the Special Adviser on Public Communication and Orientation, Sunday Dare.
The convention is expected to produce a new set of national executives who will oversee the party’s affairs and coordinate preparations for the 2027 elections, including the conduct of primaries to nominate candidates for the presidency, governorships, National Assembly, and State Houses of Assembly.
