Nollywood actor Kunle Remi has voiced strong concerns over Nigeria’s worsening economic situation, calling on citizens to abandon political silence and actively engage in national discourse.
In a video posted on Instagram, the actor described the rising cost of living as overwhelming, highlighting the impact of expensive petrol and unreliable electricity on everyday life. He revealed that he recently bought fuel at about N1,300 per litre, stressing that the cost of powering generators has become increasingly unsustainable.
Remi argued that staying neutral on political matters is no longer realistic given the current hardship. According to him, Nigerians must begin to question leadership and demand accountability rather than avoid sensitive conversations.
He criticised the long-standing culture of avoiding political discussions, insisting that such an approach is now harmful. The actor urged citizens to speak up, ask questions, and seek solutions to the country’s challenges.
Expressing frustration, Remi questioned why Nigeria—despite being an oil-producing nation—remains highly vulnerable to global oil market disruptions. He pointed to the country’s reliance on limited refining capacity and the failure of existing refineries to operate effectively.
The actor also highlighted the ripple effects on businesses and workers. He noted that rising transportation costs have made it difficult for employees to commute, reducing the value of their earnings in a short time.
Remi admitted the situation has taken a mental toll on him, citing the combined pressure of high fuel prices, costly diesel, and persistent power outages.
His remarks mirror concerns previously raised by fellow Nollywood actor Wale Akorede, who also criticised the high cost of fuel in Nigeria despite the country’s oil wealth.
The growing outcry from public figures reflects a broader frustration among Nigerians grappling with economic strain and rising living costs.
