Israel says it has killed an Iranian navy commander overseeing the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy shipping route, as regional tensions continue to escalate alongside ongoing strikes across the Middle East.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said Alireza Tangsiri, a senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) naval commander, was directly responsible for restricting access to the strategic waterway.
Katz stated that Tangsiri âwas directly responsibleâ for blocking the Strait of Hormuz and had been âblown up,â though Iran has not confirmed his death.
The Strait of Hormuzâone of the worldâs busiest oil transit corridorsâhas been effectively disrupted by Iran since the outbreak of the war last month, intensifying global economic concerns.
An influential global policy group earlier warned that the blockade was âraising costs, weighing on demand and adding to inflationary pressuresâ worldwide, as energy markets continue to face instability.
Meanwhile, United States President Donald Trump claimed Iran had been âmilitarily obliteratedâ and said its negotiators had been âbeggingâ to reach a deal, comments Tehran has rejected, insisting no talks with Washington are currently taking place.
On Wednesday, an Iranian official issued five conditions for ending the war, following reports that Iran had received a 15-point peace proposal from the United States.
Fighting continues across multiple fronts, including Iran and Lebanon, while in Abu Dhabi, two people were killed by debris from an intercepted missile believed to have been launched by Iran, further underscoring the regional spillover of the conflict.
