BMW’s Chinese division has announced a recall of almost 180,000 vehicles due to a potential wiring defect in air conditioning systems that could pose a fire hazard, according to China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR).
The recall, which takes effect immediately, covers 133,849 locally manufactured 5 Series models produced between December 5, 2023, and April 12, 2025, as well as 45,678 imported 5 Series, 7 Series, and M5 vehicles manufactured from June 2022 to April 2025.
SAMR explained that the affected vehicles feature a front cabin air conditioning wiring harness that may become damaged during post-sale air filter replacements due to improper wiring.
“In extreme cases, this could cause a short circuit, posing a fire risk,” the regulator said.
BMW will inspect and secure the air conditioning wiring harness for all affected vehicles at no cost to owners, urging drivers to contact authorized service centers for prompt rectification.
The recall highlights growing scrutiny of vehicle safety standards in China and BMW’s proactive measures to mitigate potential hazards.
