Actress and singer Angela Okorie has shared details of her recent detention at the Suleja Correctional Centre, describing the experience as transformative.
Okorie was held at the facility in connection with a cybercrime case involving fellow actress Mercy Johnson. In a post published on Instagram, she reflected on her time in custody, stating that it altered her perception of life and human dignity.
According to her, the period of detention offered lessons in resilience, strength, hope and compassion.
“I want to share a deeply personal experience that has profoundly changed my perspective on life,” she wrote, noting that the environment was not entirely as she had imagined before entering.
Returns with Medical Supplies
Following her release, Okorie returned to the correctional centre with medical supplies and welfare materials, particularly for children born within the facility.
She highlighted concerns over what she described as difficult living conditions and a shortage of essential medications. The situation of young children living with their incarcerated mothers, she said, deeply affected her.
“One thing that really touched me was the children born inside the prison,” she stated, explaining that some women were already pregnant at the time of their incarceration.
Okorie added that the needs she observed prompted her to act, stressing that her donations were funded personally through her foundation.
“For me, giving is not merely an act; it is a way of life,” she wrote, adding that acts of kindness have guided her through challenging times.
Call for Compassion
The actress said she believes her time at the centre may have been part of a larger purpose — to understand, empathise and serve others.
She has since pledged to continue supporting the children and encouraged others to adopt generosity as a lifestyle.
“To everyone reading this, I encourage you to embrace giving as a lifestyle,” she added.
Okorie’s remarks have drawn attention to welfare conditions in custodial facilities while marking a reflective chapter in her ongoing legal and personal journey.
