The Office for National Statistics said on Tuesday that July 2027 would be an important decision point in determining whether preparations are sufficient to begin the transition to the Transformed Labour Force Survey, known as the TLFS.
The ONS said November 2027 remains the most likely timeframe for the change, provided the agency and data users are ready.
The new survey is expected to replace the existing Labour Force Survey, or LFS, which has faced persistent problems affecting the quality of labour market data.
The statistics office said continuing to operate both surveys would increase costs while also raising concerns about data quality.
The proposed transition is intended to improve the quality of labour market information while avoiding the growing costs and challenges of maintaining both surveys simultaneously.
The July 2027 decision point will help determine whether the ONS and data users are ready for the transition to begin as planned.
