Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has denied reports claiming he asked military personnel to reject any salary increase until after the 2027 elections.
The Peter Obi Media Relations (POMR) team, in a statement issued on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, described the report as false and an attempt by the former Anambra State governor’s opponents to misrepresent his position.
The statement followed a clarification by Obi on his X handle, where he said a recent report had falsely attributed comments to him suggesting that Nigerian soldiers should refuse salary increments until after the elections.
“I wish to address a recent report that falsely attributes a statement to me, suggesting that Nigerian soldiers should refuse any salary increments until after the elections. This assertion is entirely untrue,” Obi said.
He reaffirmed his support for the country’s security forces, particularly members of the Nigerian Army, who he said continue to serve and protect the nation under difficult conditions.
“My profound respect for our security forces, particularly the Nigerian Army personnel who diligently serve and protect our nation under challenging conditions, is unwavering,” he said.
Obi said he had consistently advocated adequate provision of equipment, motivation and protection for security personnel, stressing that the welfare and safety of soldiers should remain a priority.
He recalled his criticism following the deaths of soldiers in insurgency-related incidents, saying the loss of personnel due to delayed rescue efforts raised concerns about how those defending the country could be left vulnerable during emergencies.
According to him, the welfare, resources, safety and dignity of members of the armed forces would be a major priority if he is elected president.
“Those who ensure Nigeria’s security must never be relegated to a secondary concern. Our soldiers are deserving of our utmost respect, unwavering support, and a government that will unequivocally stand by them,” Obi said.
He further pledged that under his leadership, situations in which security personnel are left unprotected in the face of danger would be eliminated.
Obi urged Nigerians to disregard what he described as the misleading report, while reaffirming his commitment to presenting what he called a clear and consistent vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria.
The POMR spokesman, in the statement, said the clarification was necessary following what he described as efforts by Obi’s opponents to fabricate statements and present them as his position.
