The Federal Government has released more than N11.58 billion for the implementation of the Renewed Hope Social Security Grant in Jigawa State, with 178,342 beneficiaries expected to benefit from the intervention.
The State Commissioner for Special Duties and Humanitarian Affairs, Auwal Sanka, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the progress of the programme across the state’s 37 local government areas.
According to Sanka, the scheme was initially designed to cover 254,413 less-privileged households before the number of beneficiaries was adjusted to 178,342.
Implementation began in January 2026, with 126,639 households receiving their payments during the first phase of the programme.
The state is now proceeding with the second phase, under which 25,300 payment cards are being distributed to registered beneficiaries.
Sanka said the distribution is expected to be completed before the end of August.
“In this second phase, the beneficiaries will receive a total grant of N1,997,500,000, in line with the programme’s guidelines,” he said.
Tinubu Raises Grant From N10,000 To N25,000
The commissioner said President Bola Tinubu approved an increase in the grant from N10,000 to N25,000 per payment cycle, citing the changing economic realities facing Nigerians.
Sanka explained that the intervention was not solely intended as a welfare measure but was also designed to strengthen household purchasing power and stimulate economic activity within local communities.
He said the primary objective of the Renewed Hope Social Security Grant was to help vulnerable families improve their livelihoods and strengthen their access to food and nutrition.
According to him, about 99 per cent of the funds are expected to be spent within local communities, creating a flow of money that could benefit small businesses and other local economic activities.
“If you inject such an amount of money into the local economy, it will have multidimensional positive impacts on rural and national productivity, thereby supporting GDP growth,” Sanka said.

The commissioner argued that supporting household consumption could ultimately stimulate production, employment and wealth creation.
He explained that when beneficiaries use the funds to purchase goods and services, local businesses could experience increased demand, potentially encouraging higher production and creating additional economic opportunities.
“As economists have posited, if you support consumption, you are indirectly promoting production. More production translates to more job creation, which in turn leads to wealth creation, growth, and development,” he said.
Sanka described the programme as both a humanitarian intervention and an economic strategy aimed at promoting broader and more sustainable development.
Jigawa Government Praises Tinubu, Namadi
The commissioner also commended Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi for supporting the programme and creating what he described as an enabling environment for its implementation.
He said feedback from communities indicated that the intervention was already having a positive impact on some beneficiary households.
“Based on feedback and testimonials received from the community, the programme has already started making a difference by transforming families’ lives for the better,” Sanka said.
He expressed appreciation to President Tinubu, Governor Namadi, members of the implementation team and other stakeholders involved in the programme.
Sanka added that the state government would continue to monitor the rollout and provide updates to policymakers and the public to support assessment of the programme and inform future planning.
