The Nigerian Government says it will continue to strengthen engagement with religious bodies, traditional institutions, civil society groups and other stakeholders to address Nigeria’s challenges.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, stated this while reacting to President Bola Tinubu’s recent meeting with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, describing constructive dialogue as essential to peace, social cohesion and national development.
Akume said the administration remains open to honest counsel and will continue consultations with faith-based organisations on issues affecting Nigerians.
He noted that discussions between the President and the bishops covered insecurity, economic hardship, public services, education, electoral credibility and political pluralism.
The SGF also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to democracy, insisting that the Tinubu administration does not support a one-party state and respects the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
On the economy, Akume acknowledged the difficulties faced by Nigerians but said ongoing reforms and investments in infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare and social programmes are aimed at improving living conditions.
He added that the government is strengthening security through reforms in intelligence, military operations and personnel welfare, while assuring Nigerians of continued efforts to tackle insecurity.
Akume said despite differences in views between government and faith organisations, both remain committed to building a peaceful, united and prosperous Nigeria.
