No fewer than 82 secondary schools have converged on the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Rowe Park, Yaba, for the 2025 edition of the Opeifa Cup, with organisers expressing optimism that talents discovered from the championship will feed into national youth handball teams.
Former Chairperson of the Lagos State Handball Association and sponsor of the competition, Mrs. Adeola Opeifa, said the programme has made remarkable contributions to the development of handball in Lagos State and across Nigeria.
Speaking at the venue, Opeifa explained that the championship, established seven years ago, aims to promote handball and nurture young players into disciplined ambassadors of their communities.
“This programme has discovered players who have gone on to represent Nigeria at both junior and senior levels. Some participants were picked from the streets, brought back to school, and today, they’ve become successful individuals,” she said.
Opeifa added that this year’s edition would serve as a platform to select players who will represent Lagos State at the next National Youth Games, noting that training and mentorship would continue for those identified as promising talents.
