In a rare admission, the Labour Party (LP) has apologized to Nigerians for its choice of presidential candidate in 2023, describing the selection of Peter Obi as a “political mistake.”
The party also welcomed Obi’s recent defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), calling it a “relief” and saying LP has been “finally liberated” by his exit.
In a statement titled “Labour Party Finally Liberated by Peter Obi’s Defection”, National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh criticized Obi’s address at the Enugu event as lacklustre and questioned the relevance of his new political agenda.
LP noted that it had effectively parted ways with Obi and some of his supporters in the National Assembly since September 2024 and had been awaiting his formal exit. “We have patiently waited for this day,” the statement said.
The party blamed Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti for the internal crisis that rocked LP after the 2023 elections, accusing them of sponsoring anti-party actions and destabilizing the national leadership.
LP also claimed Obi’s political influence has waned and warned that his new political venture is unlikely to succeed.
