Nigerian music icon Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, has penned a deeply emotional open letter to celebrate 25 years of an extraordinary career that helped define modern Afrobeats.
In the piece titled “Open Letter of Gratitude 2Baba @ 25 Years in the Industry,” the award-winning singer reflected on his rise from humble beginnings to becoming one of Africa’s most celebrated musicians. He described his journey as one filled with “gratitude, memories, lessons, and love,” while extending heartfelt appreciation to the people who believed in him even before fame.
“This celebration is not mine alone. It belongs to everyone who played a role in shaping the story of Innocent Idibia, 2Baba,” he wrote.
2Baba acknowledged several pioneers who influenced his early career, including Nelson Brown, Kenny Ogungbe (Baba Keke), Dayo Adeneye (D1), Eddie Lawani, and DJ Jimmy Jatt.
He praised Nelson Brown for discovering and nurturing the Plantashun Boiz, the trio that launched his career alongside Faze and Blackface.
“You gave us a voice when we barely had a microphone, a space when all we had was a dream,” he said.
The “African Queen” crooner also thanked Baba Keke and D1 for opening professional doors that changed not just his life, but the course of Nigerian entertainment.
“You stood as mentors and big brothers, and your names will forever be etched in my story,” he noted.
2Baba further appreciated Eddie Lawani for providing platforms for young talents when opportunities were scarce and lauded DJ Jimmy Jatt for his loyalty and unwavering support throughout the years.
Reflecting on the milestone, the singer emphasized that his 25-year journey transcends personal success, it stands as a tribute to everyone who contributed to the growth and global recognition of Nigerian music.
“Without the people who believed, corrected, and supported me, my story would have been incomplete,” he wrote.
From his early days with Plantashun Boiz in the late 1990s to timeless hits like “African Queen,” “If Love Is a Crime,” and “For Instance,” 2Baba’s legacy continues to inspire generations of African artists and music lovers worldwide.
