The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has officially announced the nominations for the 98th Academy Awards, setting the stage for one of the most competitive Oscar races in recent years.
Actors Lewis Pullman and Danielle Brooks revealed the nominees across all 24 categories on Thursday, with Ryan Coogler’s Sinners emerging as the clear frontrunner. The film secured a historic 16 nominations, the highest ever for a single movie, surpassing the previous record of 14 held by All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land.
Close behind is Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, which earned 13 nominations, cementing its position as another major contender heading into awards season.
The 98th Oscars ceremony will take place on March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood. Comedian and television host Conan O’Brien is set to return as host.
In the prestigious Best Picture category, nominees include Sinners, One Battle After Another, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, Sentimental Value, Train Dreams, Bugonia, The Secret Agent, and F1: The Movie.
The acting categories feature a strong mix of established stars and acclaimed performances. Michael B. Jordan received a Best Actor nomination for Sinners, competing against Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another), Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), and Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent).
In the directing race, nominees include Ryan Coogler (Sinners), Paul Thomas Anderson (One Battle After Another), Joachim Trier (Sentimental Value), Josh Safdie (Marty Supreme), and Chloé Zhao (Hamnet).
Sinners also secured nominations across multiple technical and creative categories, including cinematography, editing, original score, casting, production design, costume design, visual effects, sound, makeup and hairstyling, and original song, underlining its broad appeal among Academy voters.
Other notable films such as Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, and Sentimental Value posted strong showings across several categories, while international and documentary contenders reflected a diverse global lineup.
With nominations now announced, attention shifts to the final voting period as Hollywood counts down to Oscar night, where Sinners will attempt to convert its historic nomination haul into major wins.
